The invisible that binds us

Spaces speak to us and profoundly influence the way we inhabit and live in cities. Neuroscience, combined with architecture and urban planning, allows us to understand the impact of urbanisation on brain activity and the relationship between space and psychophysical well-being. The results tend to suggest that city life amplifies brain responses to social events that generate anxiety, supporting the hypothesis that crowding plays a key role: living surrounded by a large number of strangers forces us to constantly adapt our behaviour, generating a continuous stress load. So, while cities offer numerous opportunities, connections and stimuli in a dynamic and multicultural context, it is also clear that these same stimuli can profoundly influence our psychological wellbeing, making it more vulnerable to the effects of urban space. The science of space, known as proxemics, reveals how much physical distance between people influences our relationships and the way we perceive our surroundings. Let's think about our daily interactions: we perceive those around us not only with our eyes, but also with a sort of "invisible aura" that surrounds us. Peripersonal space is the portion of space that surrounds our body, what we might call our "aura": it is why our brain is able to register the presence of others even without direct physical, visual or tactile contact. This phenomenon is linked to the studies of Edward T. Hall, who in his essay The Hidden Dimension defined proxemics as the discipline that analyses acceptable social distances based on interpersonal relationships. For example, when we work in a team, if there is cooperation, our "auras" tend to merge, creating a stronger connection. 'After all, we are nothing more than evolved monkeys who have left the forest to live in cities, but we continue to replicate ancestral dynamics. Understanding how space affects our empathy and relationships could help us build more harmonious and connected environments.'
